Harlequin-Type Ichthyosis- Alien Baby
Harlequin is a rare genetic disorder or defect which causes the keratin layer of the skin to thicken and make the baby look like a Alien baby or tiger baby at berth.
Cause of Harlequin: Harlequin babies are at high risk of bacterial infection. The disease occurs with mutation in the protein gene.
Harlequin Cases: In 2010, Harlequin baby was born in Gilgit Pakistan. The baby had blood red eyes and tiger stripes on his body. People started calling the baby, Alien baby. Difficult to survive, death usually occurs within a few days due to general infection. Exception, Nusrit “Nelly” Shaheen is the oldest survivor, having been born in 1984 and she’s still alive.
